Herding Lessons SE Ohio ~ Dana Hasemeier ~ May 17th Show full header Dana will be returning, May 17th to give herding lessons on sheep and goats.  Some spots are available. All levels are welcome.

Lessons will be $45/hour, and will be paced for the dog.  If you prefer, you can schedule 2 shorter sessions for the same price, with a break in between.  Goats are school level.  Sheep are light.  There is plenty of room to hike and have a little fun with the dog in between.

These are private lessons, but you can watch me and my dogs, and if you give permissions, others will watch you.  Dress for the weather, and mud.  So far, the paddocks are not slippery, but that could change.  They dry out nicely, but if it rains the day before, you can expect some standing water.

We are one hour from downtown Columbus, Ohio.

Upcoming Herding Trials in Washington

The premium is out for the annual Cascade ACD Club July 21, 22 trials on Whidbey Island in Washington. (Closes July 6)  We are having 8 trials in two days so plenty of chances to earn championship points.  Sat and Sun we have an ACD only cattle trial and one each All breed sheep, ducks, and cattle.  Whidbey is a beautiful place to spend a day or a lifetime.  Coupeville and Oak Harbor are not far 20 and 30 minutes from the trial site respectively for hotels if the local hotels and B&Bs are booked.  Camping on site is lovely and preffered by many.

The premium shows a very limited number of cattle and duck runs don't let this deter you from entering. We do have access to more stock if there are enough entries.  Our judges will be Carol Wolfram and Steve Waltenburg. Patty Carey and Brenda Burk are once again doing our hospitality which has become quite famous.  Cascade club is well know for putting on a first class event, so come on up and enjoy the island.

Cattle Dog vs Border Collie

Australian Cattle Dogs vs. Border Collies by Ann Jordan

Australian Cattle Dogs are a unique breed that is used by many ranchers across America, Australia and anywhere where ranching is quite the norm. But, there is also quite a difference between the way an Australian Cattle Dog herds livestock compared to a Border Collie.

An Australian Cattle Dog has a natural instinct to drive livestock away from itself whereas Border Collies have a natural instinct to fetch livestock to you. This is the major difference between Border Collies and all other breeds of herding or working dogs. A Border Collie can be taught to drive livestock and an Australian Cattle Dog can be taught to fetch, but when it comes down to instinct, you'll want to select what will work best for your ranch needs.

Some folks use both breeds together, which is probably the best thing to do if you are grazing your cattle in very large spaces where you can't see most of your herd. Sending out a Border Collie to fetch them for you is the best thing to do. When moving your herd from pasture to pasture, you'll likely use your Australian Cattle Dog, especially if you have stubborn cattle that won't move easily.

Either dog is fine to work in these conditions, but each one has it's "herding specialty" and when trained properly can be a huge asset to any farmer or rancher.

Here is a clip of an Australian Cattle Dog learning how to herd sheep. You'll notice that this dog loves to be in tight on the sheep. This is because of that instinct I told you about where he wants to drive the livestock to another destination. The owner even has a leash or cord tied onto the dog to stop him quick if he decides to nip the sheep and hang on to get them to move. After you've finished watching this video, check out the next one and see the difference when a Border Collie works. You'll notice a Border Collie keeps more distance away from the sheep and also tries to continue fetching the sheep towards the owner as she moves about. Very interesting stuff!

Whether you're a trail worn long-time herder or a newbie who is still trying to figure out if you read stock from left to right or right to left, this site has something for you.  The cute little flash illustrations are most helpful as well as entertaining.  And, the videos, though not cattle dogs,  do show dogs working cattle.

Reserve High in Trial went to Lori Pruett and Australian Cattle Dog, "Ch. River Forth Texanna Song."

The Salina Kennel Club celebrated its 50th anniversary by hosting its first-ever herding trial Sept. 16-17 in Salina, Kan. The trial was held just down the road from the all-breed show site at the CP Ranch owned and operated by Cecil Pettit.
